Headlight Restoration

Go From Yellow To Clear

Do you have yellow headlights?

Yellow headlights are caused by years of oxidation. The only true way to fix this is to sand off the factory clear coat on your headlights and spray new clear. That’s exactly what we do. We start we 400 grit sandpaper and work our way all the way up to 1500 grit. After that, your headlights are ready to clearcoat. Any more sanding and the clear coat will not adhere properly to the surface. We use two coats to 2K clear. This is the same as the clearcoat used on the paint of your car. 2K means two part, the clear paint itself, and an activator. Using the clearcoat instead of a ceramic coating like others, we can guarantee that your headlights will stay clear as long as they did from the factory. Using a ceramic coating, they can only guarantee up to a year. After this, we recommend not to get your vehicle wet for at least 48 hours as the clearcoat fully cures. Do not wash for at least a week. We do require a wash before this procedure. This is due to help remove contaminants from the headlights and because you will not be able to wash your vehicle for a while after this procedure.

Our Process

1. Tape off surrounding areas

We do this to protect the paint work around your headlight from the sanding process and clearcoat process.

2. Start sanding

We start with 400 grit and sand both headlights until all the clear coat is removed and they have a uniform appearance. We then work our way through 600, 800, 100, then 1500 grit to bring the scratches back out and prepare for the clearcoat.

3. Remove tape and thoroughly clean

We use water to sand and that makes a mess. We need to clean the areas where the dirty water got onto so new tape can stick.

4. Retape and mask off

Next, we retape around the lights and cover the front of the car in plastic to protect the paint from overspray.

5. Clearcoat

We clean and tack the headlights again to make sure the surface is clean, then we start spraying. Each headlight will receive two coats of 2K clear.

6. Wait

Sanding is the most time consuming part of this procedure. Next is waiting for paint to dry. We have to wait 10 to 15 minutes in-between coats. After the second coat is dry to the touch, we can start removing tape and plastic from the vehicle.

7. Inspect

Finally, we look over the headlights and surrounding areas. We make sure the headlights are as free from blemishes as we can get them. Sometimes there is some damage to the inside of the headlights which we cannot fix. We also inspect the surrounding paint to make sure there was no overspray the sneaked through out plastic and the paint is completely clean.
